Saturday 12 August
Bright and early this morning our eyes popped open and we were out of the starting gates, happily scampering down to the dining room at 6:30. NOT!!!
It was more of a tortoise pace, on our earliest morning of WSC.
Today was one loaded with academic events. The past months of learning, files filled to the brim with information, finally paid off. From about 9:30 until 18:00, our teams were involved in:
- Team Debates
Teams worked together to research and debate motions drawn from the study topics for 2017.
- Collaborative Writing
Teams brainstormed together on different essay topics before composing individual, persuasive essays on theme related material.
- Scholars Challenge.
Scholars wrote a rigorous exam. This demonstrated their learning across all subjects within the 2017 theme.
The theme for this year was “An Unlikely World”. Topics for Debates, Writing, Challenges, as well as tomorrow’s Scholars Bowl emanate from various subjects.
- Science & Technology – shoot for the moon.
- History – The history of conspiracy.
- Literature – voices of the almost impossible.
- Art & Music – fragments of an improbably universe.
- Special Area – modern mythologies.
- Social Studies – predicting the future.
A veritable tome of learning went into this. Well done BESA!
After oozing all this intellect, we returned from our host venue at DF Malan Hoërskool in Bellville to CTICC for the Scholars Cultural Fair. A riot of colourful traditional costumes, posters, food and fun. Friendships formed, numbers swapped & lots of laughter. The downturned mouths when we needed to return to our hotel was evidence of the levels of excitement.
Until next time … au revoir!
